Adopt a Greyhound … The Possibilities!

Adopt a Greyhound … The Possibilities!

I read yesterday in the DomPost about a new programme which arranges for former racing greyhounds to be adopted and live a life of luxury watching Trackside on the couch. Sounds like my idea of retirement!

Apparently, greyhounds like sprinting around every now and then but apart from that, they are loving, kind, and low budget – all legs and no stomach.

We’ve got three dogs so there’s no room for any greyhounds but the concept did get me thinking … why not apply it to other sports?

For a start, how about adopting an ex All Black or Warrior on their retirement? Mind you, with all the players heading off to the UK from both rugby and league, you could be excused for thinking that the Poms have already started the programme.

They’d be some risks too – you’d have to find a family without young kids or fragile noses if you were trying to adopt out a player like Richard Loe and some of the players eg Dougie – can’t quite claim to be house trained yet either.

We would need to be careful tho – some players clearly have medication that would need to be made readily available. For example, Marc Ellis would appear to need a hotline to the local Vet.

The programme would obviously work well with cricket too – we could even bolster the ranks of the Zim team be adopting out some of our retired players. In the spirit of fostering the international game, I’m sure we could happily arrange for Macca to be adopted.

I suspect that there would be plenty of couch potatoes lining up to adopt retired Silver Fern netballers and particularly retired Russian tennis players (females only). But that just goes to show how successful the programme could be!

Thankfully, the concept is not applicable to retired news/current affairs reporters or ex-politicians!
