Just a game
The tragic events surrounding the death of Sonny Fai put sport into context.
For all the jumping up and down on couches (yes, I did get a tad excited when the Warriors beat the Storm), sport is not life and death.
To be fair, the loss of anyone in this way will impact on many people. The fragility of life is something most of us take for granted and it takes tragedies like this to remind us that nothing should be taken for granted.
The Warriors decision to postpone training indefinitely is the right one. At the moment, there are far more important things in life than winning the NRL and the team, players, and their supporters must deal with the loss before anything else.
Strangely, a tragedy such as this can work one of two ways – it can destroy the team or it can galvanise the team to perform in memory of an emerging star.
Right now it doesn’t matter. Sonny Fai’s death will cast a shadow over the Warriors’ season regardless of their results.
Sonny Fai – RIP.
